Swamp Rabbit
(Sylvilagus aquaticus)

Habitat: bottomland hardwood and floodplain forests and swamps, canebrakes, and
coastal marshes

Diet: bamboo or cane, aquatic plants, grasses, sedges, tree seedlings, and leaves

Description:  Length: 17.7 - 21.7 inches
                    Weight: 4.25 - 6 lbs
                    Color: The coarse fur is a dark rusty brown on the back and sides, and the belly is
                              white.  A black spot is present between the ears.
                   Other things to look for: The ears are bluntly rounded.

# of Babies: 1 - 6 (usually 3 or 4)

Gestation Period: Forty days

Interesting Fact: The Swamp Rabbit is mostly nocturnal.

EXTRA CREDIT

Location in the US: This rabbit ranges from eastern Texas north to southeastern
Kansas, east to southern Indiana, south down through the Mississippi Delta, then east to extreme western South Carolina.

Location in Georgia: In Georgia, the Swamp Rabbit can be found along the rivers
and streams of the Piedmont region and northern edge of the
                 Coastal Plain.
